Wine Photography – Show Your Specialty
As a commercial photographer who lives on a hilltop surrounded by neighbors who grow syrah and zinfandel, I have the good fortune to photograph the wine world frequently – the growing of wine, the making of wine, the promotion of wine, the consumption of wine… Like any type pf photography, it’s hard work when I’m in the midst of a shoot. Afterwards, of course, there are special benefits.
I wasn’t always a wine photographer. For years, I shot color-critical work for horticulture catalogs (yes, much less fun than shooting wine). I’d probably still be shooting hort if the baby boomers had not given up gardening for other pursuits – like drinking wine and traveling. When the horticulture industry began to fall on hard times several years ago, I began to diversify my shooting. Eventually, my wine photography grew to a point where I now market myself as a specialist in the field. (Click here to check out my work as a wine photographer.)
The lesson learned – if you are a commercial shooter who has been displaced by the economy, take a serious look at your neighborhood for opportunities. You may find that there are specialties there that are waiting to be developed and marketed.

Aside of a new base for income, I bet you got one or two good bottles out of it, too? I certainly couldn’t resist the offer of a good wine
Maybe I should look into something like that. After all I’m living right in the middle of the ‘unterfraenkisches Weinanbaugebiet’, aka Wuerzburg.
All the best!
Beautiful images, Syl. These are incredible images. They look good enough to drink!
Interesting post. I’ve done something similar with a wine shop here in town (in Illinois, the local wine leaves much to be desired, so we have to congregate at wine retailing shops) by photographing products and events. What really caught my eye, was the capsule for the bottle of Petite Petit in the very top left corner.
I’m such a nerd!

These are great images. Very nice variety, each so well done. I’ll bet the clients are quite happy. Take an ordinary subject and put it in the hands of an extraordinary pro!
I’ve never known that this can be special genre of photography!
Very nice. Clean, well lit, tight comp. All the good stuff that people who love what they do accomplish on demand. Keep up the good work! We know the feeling about former specialties drying up and are working on a similar thought but different path.
