Update: The Speedliter’s Intensive™ will tour the US in spring 2010 (and hopefully head overseas in the summer / fall). Join the mailing list, via the link just below, and you’ll be able to vote on which cities the workshop should be held in. You’ll also be among the first to know the exact locations and dates.
Now back to our regularly scheduled program (aka: the original post)…
My Speedliter’s Intensive™ Seminar will be hitting the road this winter and spring. The first stop will be my old hometown, Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, January 16, 2010. Amateur or pro, if you’re looking for the most comprehensive program on putting Canon Speedlites to work, the Speedliter’s Intensive™ Seminar is for you.
This one-day workshop focuses exclusively on Canon Speedlites. You’ll get the how-to and why-to specific to your Canon gear. It’s called ‘Intensive’ for a reason—a ton of information will be headed your way all day. In fact, there’s so much information to keep track of that every participant will receive the Speedliter’s Intensive™ Workbook—so you can go home with all the details. Regardless of whether you’re a novice with one Speedlite or an experienced shooter with many, this workshop will get your Speedlite technique to the next level.
Seminar topics include:
- The best uses for on- and off-camera Speedlites
- Deciding between Manual and E-TTL flash control
- Putting Flash Exposure Compensation to use
- Grip gear for Speedlites – from ultra-portable to ultra-sturdy
- On-flash modifiers: grids, snoots, diffusers, ringlight adapters, etc.
- Off-flash modifiers: umbrellas, softboxes, diffusion panels, reflectors, beauty dish, etc.
- Using your Speedlite’s bounce and zoom as a light modifier
- Corded solutions for moving your Speedlite off-camera
- Sorting out radio triggers: dumb vs. intelligent
- Setting up the 580EX/EXII as a wireless Master
- Setting up the 580EX/EXII and 430EX/EXII as wireless Slaves
- Organizing multiple Speedlites with Groups and Channels
- All the Syncs: High-speed, 1st-curtain, 2nd-curtain, Slow-speed
- Custom functions: optimizing your Speedlites
- Strategies for portrait lighting
- Strategies for product / food lighting
- Strategies for event / wedding photography
- Fill-flash techniques
- Using gels for color correction and dramatic effects
- Battery charging and storage
- One-, two-, three-Speedlite kits (and beyond!)
- Ganglight: the how and why of firing a large number of Speedlites together
- Strategies for using Speedlites with other brands of small flash
- Using Speedlites with studio lights
You’ll see a wide range of gear:
If you’re curious about whether a piece of Speedlite gear really works, the Speedliter’s Intensive™ is the place to come find out. I’ll be bringing my favorite gear from:
- Bogen / Avenger
- RadioPopper
- Honl
- Kacey

- and others.

How about coming to Hawaii?
Can’t wait for the Portland (hopefully) tour stop!
Dumb question, but should we bring our own flash gear? Speedlights, stands, remotes, modifiers, ST2, any of this useful to bring?
Thanks and regards,
-joel
@JoelG – Not a dumb question. If you want to follow along with the demos and change settings on your own gear, it can be helpful to bring a camera and Speedlite. Stands, modifiers and the rest — not so helpful. The format of the ‘Intensive’ is a very fast-paced set of presentations and demos. Won’t be much / any direct shooting time for students. Everyone heads home with detailed workbook so that they can practice later. Thanks for asking.
i just registered. looking forward to it.
Please come to Orlando FL. Thanks
I know Los Angeles would welcome you with open arms! Consider it?
How about making the Orlando workshop correspond with Photoshop World in Orlando next March??

I guarantee you’d pack the house in Atlanta. We’ve got a bunch of photography groups that would love it. As an example of the number of photogs, I think we have 5 different Help-Portrait locations this Saturday all packed with volunteers.
Sioux Falls South Dakota would be a great place.
When are you coming to Orlando?
Minneappolis would be a great place. Cool locations down by the river. I could get you in contact with TCPPA if you want.
When will you be in Fort Lauderdale or Orlando?
Thanks,
Doreen

Alaska is sure nice….in January!
Wow…any of you considering this workshop should think no more. I had the pleasure of attending the inaugural Speedliter Intensive Canon Flash Seminar in Phoenix today and it was EXACTLY as it was advertised. The content was extensive (but not overwhelming), TONS of resources provided and Syl’s presentation style was just perfect…he’s a born educator…and not all pro photographers can effectively teach what they know! Quite simply the best photographic educational experience I’ve had to date. Thanks to Syl and the Legend City Studios!!

Portland is a MUST…. Too many of us interested in this city to miss.
Charlotte, NC!
We packed the conference center when Kelby Training came through…not to drop names. I’m just sayin’.
[...] What I’m referring to now is photography lighting. I really want to learn it. I bought Zach Arias’ One Light DVD tutorial last July. I watched it briefly right after I received the DVD. I knew so little about my camera and everything else; I couldn’t follow along and got frustrated. I took the DVD out and told myself I’d watch it later. I didn’t watch the DVD later, even though I carried the DVD in my computer bag, always intending to watch it when away, out of town. But I never did watch it. I didn’t watch it again, until, last week, the day before I drove to Syl’s Off Camera Flash Lighting Seminar. [...]
